Mistaken Identity

The NJF&W puts out a lovely magazine and I just happened to carry my May copy which was dedicated to marine fishing. In that magazine was an article about the invasive Chinese Mitten Crab and it also included a couple of pictures of two other breeds of crabs, spider and green, which can be mistaken for the mitten crab. I had read that article months ago but still had it planted in my mind when I pulled this guy out of the water.

In my head this was a mitten crab, it was invading the waters, it was killing other crabs, it had to die! I went into a full blown rant and probably said every derogatory thing about a mitten crab that could ever be said. Back and forth on the boat, down in the cabin, back up in the cockpit, back down in the cabin looking for that magazine with the telephone number of the Nacote Creek Marine Fisheries office. Back and forth while ranting to my husband "Kill it, kill it! Smack it against the side of the boat, I don't care just kill it. Wait, lets put it in this trash can, I think they want it alive."  The entire time my husband is telling me it is a spider crab not a mitten crab, but I am not hearing him. He's a good man and just let's me go off on my little tangent until reason came back into my head.

I finally found the magazine and the telephone number. It was Saturday and here was no answer, just a recording so, with a desperate tone in my voice,  I left a message: "I have one of those bad spider crabs (notice I did say spider crab, not mitten crab) here in a bucket, what do you want me to do with it?" Click. Second telephone call: "Sorry, I just called about the spider crab, I forgot to leave my telephone number which is" and I left my number. Click.

Then I sat down and looked at the crab. Breathe, look at the crab, breathe again - "Crap, that's a spider crab!" "OK little fella, back in the water you go."

Dialed that telephone number for the third time. "Sorry, made a mistake. I let the spider crab go, didn't mean to bother you. Have a nice day."

My husband was amused, our friends at the marina were amused and I am sure come morning, the people at Nacote Creek Marine Fisheries will be amused.

Pink Rules!

Hubs is a little bit competitive when it comes to me and him fishing. He usually won't even drop a line in the water unless I haul something in the boat first. Then the competition begins.

I had my mind set on kingfish today and we went to a spot where they were being caught. Dropped a line to the bottom just in case a few flukes were around and then I got out my pink spinner rod. Put the king fish leader on and baited and then waited.

Hubs makes fun of my pink rod and reel.

Hubs got the first bite, his one and only, a black sea bass. A tiny little black sea bass. "That's one for me."

Then the spots started hitting my line, one, two, three, four, five, six! They were just wee little ones but size doesn't matter and kind of fish doesn't matter to me. I love the anticipation of what just might be at the end of the line.

Besides, I beat him 6 -1. Pink rules!Cool

Don't complain, do something about it!

For all of you New Jersey fishing people who complain about how the size limits get bigger each year, here is your chance to do something about it.  Apparently, NJDEP Fish and Wildlife have very little information to work with each year and thus raise the catch limits. Completing this survey, even if for only one fishing trip will give them the information needed. I "catch and release" yet I am willing to participate.

My manicurist earns her paycheck.

Prior to a couple of years ago I wouldn't even look at a fishing pole or touch a worm with my manicured fingernails. Now, I live to go fishing. Those five days of work are just a segway to the weekend when I can fish.

Winter, spring, summer, fall, I don't care about the weather I just want to fish. I don't care if I catch anything, I just want to fish.

I am a type A personality, I can not sit still, ever.  But give me a fishing pole and I will sit for hours and hours and hours waiting, just waiting for that tap on that line, that one chance to catch "the big one".
