Obsession Fishing 5/14/11
Mike Marley put this trip together with friends Dave, Jim, Mark, Mike and Jim. We left at 5:30 and started fishing a few miles north of the inlet. We were not marking much bait and didn’t see any surface action. We worked depths of 45 to 60 feet the water temp was 56 to 57.3 degrees through the day. On our way up the beach we got our first bite on a green spoon and Dave landed our first fish 44” these fish are all healthy fat fish. We continued fishing the same area and had 3 more fish one came on a shad rig we thought it was going to be a short one when we got it on deck it measured 32” hard to believe it looked small ,that just gives you an idea how big the stripers are . Several years ago a 32” fish would have been something to talk about now we call it a small fish ! We continued getting bites through the day It was an even bites on spoons (Green and White) and we caught 2 on Shad Rigs . We finished up with 9 Stripers and we missed 3.Most bites came with a blue screen, more location driven.
We have been fishing together with these guys for 21 years. I enjoy their trips, they are a bunch of good friends that like to spend time with each other and it shows. This type of fishing is perfect for them we were trolling is near perfect weather and getting bites spread out throughout the day. We were looking for bunker schools to try snagging bunker and jigging that hasn’t materialized with any consistency yet. There has been some spotty jigging bites nothing we can count on yet. We expect the striper fishing to improve as the weather settles. We canceled our weekday trips . The forecast is calling for easterly wind and seas of 5’ to 8’ . Hopefully it passes sooner and the bait regroups.
